Charred. Scorched. Ashen. Painful. Searing. Blackened. Malodorous. These are the effects of a burn. Varying degrees of pain and damage occur when the human body is burned. Burns can be as minor as a small blister or as severe as death. Satan enjoys seeing our spiritual wounds when he takes aim with his fiery darts. Darts that pierce our flesh, deep down into the heart and mind. He is a master marksmen. Taking aim when we are at our weakest and most susceptible to their damage.
This weakness does not occur all at once. Different degrees of fiery darts, burn us at varying times in our lives. The burns weaken us and tear at our flesh. Leaving a mark, a scar. I want to focus on three degrees of a burn to the human body.
First degree burn – This is the mildest burn. A pink or red area may appear on the skin. No blistering occurs with this burn. Although the mildest, the pain is intense. Satan takes his mark and pierces us leaving behind a first degree burn. A burn that is as mild as a white lie but as painful as a betrayal. A burn that is as mild as a disobedient child but as painful as a prodigal teenager.
Second degree burn – The second layer of skin has been penetrated and is damaged. Blistering occurs with fluid eventually oozing out. With this second layer of skin being compromised, there is now greater pain. His arrow has went a little deeper. The hurt oozes out effecting the surrounding areas of life. A pain as great as a spouse not submitting to the Lord which leads to losing faith in God. A pain as great as a gossiping friend which leads to a broken spirit.
Third degree burn – The most severe of burns. A burn to the core. Effecting the deepest layer of skin. Organs can also be effected. This is the least painful burn because all of the nerves have been damaged. Satan uses his fiery arrows to numb us, to desensitize us to our surroundings. He inflicts the most damage, but we are unaware of the extent. Depression so severe, our heart is effected and we are barely living. Guilt so severe, we are consumed and our brains can’t comprehend God’s saving grace.
Our flesh can not withstand his fiery darts. He provides an armor. An armor intertwined with the impenetrable Word of God. An armor that can smother the flame. Rendering it completely ineffective. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Ephesians 6:16
God has given us weapons of war. Amongst other weapons, a shield of faith. A faith in God’s chosen weapon of warfare. Whether it be stillness or fury, we must have faith in God’s method of engagement. He may choose to fight the battle in stillness or with a barrage of affliction. A spiritual battle for your life is happening everyday. We will lose every time if we choose to battle Satan head on. Have faith in God to take your place in the battle. He is waiting to be called to the front line. Scripture tells us that ALL the fiery darts shall be quenched. The shield of faith must be utilized.
When Satan’s fiery darts are raining down on you, lift your shield high. Have faith that God will battle and He will win. And the Lord shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him. Psalm 37:40
